BOARD MEMBERS

John Walsh (Chair)

Mr. Walsh is a lawyer and shareholder at the law firm of Hill & Robbins P.C. In addition to his role with Invest in Kids, Mr. Walsh is active in many community and civic groups, including the Board of the Colorado Lawyers Committee and Leadership Denver through the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. He was a partner at Holland & Hart LLP before joining Hill & Robbins, and served for many years as a federal prosecutor.

Robert Hill (Co-Founder of Invest in Kids)

Mr. Hill is a shareholder and founder of the law firm Hill & Robbins P.C.He is a past chair of the Colorado Lawyers’ Committee and received its Individual of the Year Award in 1990 and the Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award in 2000.He is a past president of the TechnicalAssistanceCenter and a former board member of: Colorado Common Cause and LARASA as well as being a founding member of Project Safeguard.Mr. Hill received the Colorado Bar Association’s Hoagland Award in 1997 and the Outstanding Volunteer award from National Philanthropy Days in 2003.

Cathy Lemon

Ms. Lemon is a judge in the Denver District Court. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Bill Owens in 2004. Prior to that, she was a partner at the law firm of Faegre & Benson.She has been on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Lawyers Committee since 1991, and chaired its board in 1995-96; Steering Committee for the Legal Aid Foundation for several years; Gender & Justice Committee of the Colorado Supreme Court since 1994 and on the Executive Committee since 1999.Among the awards she has received are: Colorado Lawyer’s Committee Individual of the Year 1993; University of Colorado Alumni Pro Bono Award 1996; Faegre & Benson's John C. Benson Pro Bono Award 1994.

Adele Phelan

Ms. Phelan is a President Emeritus of The Clayton Foundation.She has worked as a consultant for the Mayor’s Office of Education and Children, and was the Interim Coordinator for The Colorado Health Institute.She serves on the board of Metropolitan State College of Denver, as well as many other nonprofit boards in the Denver Metro Area (for example, Colorado Nonprofit Development Center, Qualistar, Colorado Bright Beginnings).

James Scarboro

Mr. Scarboro is a partner with the law firm of Arnold & Porter.He was a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Byron White (1971-72).He chaired the board of the Colorado Lawyer’s Committee in 1994-95, and remains on their board.He received the Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award in 2000 from the Lawyers Committee, in addition to numerous other prestigious awards from his peers in the legal community.

Eric Hilty

Mr. Hilty is the Assistant General Counsel for AIMCO. Prior to that he was a partner with the law firm of Holland & Hart LLP.He has been a volunteer with the NationalSportsCenter for the Disabled for ten years.He took a one year leave of absence from his practice at Holland & Hart and was the Associate Director of Invest in Kids (1999-2000).

Gregory Kanan

Mr. Kanan is a partner with the law firm of Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons LLP. He is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Denver, a mentor in the Minority Mentor Program at the University of Denver School of Law and the University of Colorado School of Law. He chaired the Board of the Colorado Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law from 1991-1993 and received the Lawyers Committee Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award in 2005. He is the recipient of the Ira C. Rothgerber, Jr. Community Betterment Award in 1994.

Jennifer Atler

Ms. Atler started as a pro-bono lawyer for Invest in Kids in 1997, joined the board in 1998 and came on as staff in 1999.Ms. Atler currently serves on the Jewish Life Committee at Rose Community Foundation.She is a graduate of the 2001 Class of Leadership Denver, through the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.Ms. Atler was chosen a Woman of Distinction by the Mile High Girl Scouts in 2003 and one of Denver’s outstanding 40 under 40 by the Denver Business Journal in 2002.She also received the Children’s Health and Welfare Award from the Colorado Chapter of the AmericanAcademy of Pediatrics.
